Follow along with us as we chart monthly progress on our building project!

We are on time and on budget, with expected completion in Fall, 2021.

January 2021

We’re progressing along smoothly!  The children’s addition is now fully enclosed (“weather-tight”).  Mechanical, electric, plumbing and framing are done, and the skylight is installed:

The Collection / Reading Room area – the “heart of the library”-  is taking shape with framing, mechanical, electric and plumbing work:

New unisex bathrooms are being framed.  Interior work spaces are getting a much-needed revamp, with preliminary work completed.

Public restrooms have been floored and tiled.  The next step is adding fixtures, partitions and sinks.  The new sprinkler room is weather-tight and just about ready for the slab on grade foundation.

December 2020

Outside:  Footings and foundations, underground utilities and steel support girders for our 6,555 square foot addition, which will eventually house our youth services department, are installed.  The roof and exterior walls are next.  Once it’s warm enough inside the addition, the concrete floor will be poured and framing will begin. A small water service room for our new sprinkler system is being erected outside the Normanskill Room.

Inside:  All space once devoted to children’s services, shelving for the book collection, and staff offices has been vacated for renovation. Demolition of the collection and offices areas is complete.  Utilities, insulation and sheet rock have all been installed in the public bathrooms.   Electrical, mechanical, data cabling and sprinkler system work is going on throughout the building, and some emergency escape windows are being converted into doors.

November 2020

Most of our collection, encompassing 100,000+ items, was relocated to allow for interior remodeling – a huge undertaking!  The DVDs are one of the few components that stayed put, to the left of our circulation desk. Fiction and non-fiction selections now occupy the space where public computers and reading room used to be, and the Helderberg Room is jam-packed with stacks of materials too.  Most items are still accessible for patrons to borrow with curbside checkouts.  If they happen to be temporarily archived, we will gladly request them from another local library.  A temporary wall was built past the former reference desk, sectioning off a huge work space to construct the new children / teen programming rooms.  Outside, the foundation is progressing for this addition and will be walled in soon, just in time for cold winter weather.  The new sprinkler system and public bathroom renovations are moving forward as well.  Usable interior space is at a premium, making maintaining social distancing even more challenging.

October 2020

Construction at GPL started in earnest in mid-October.  Outside, a path was forged for heavy machinery to access the eastern end of the building.  Land was cleared – carefully preserving as many trees as possible – to prepare the foundation for the children’s wing addition. This path will eventually become an auxiliary parking lot. Inside, ceiling tiles were removed to update the infrastructure and install a sprinkler system (our first). Public bathroom renovations are also underway.
