Get Started in Three Easy Steps

Step 1: Register

  • Please take a moment to register. It is important to us and helps us maintain fun discussion groups like Earbuds and Bookmarks. It also lets us contact you in the event that meeting dates and/or times change. You can register HERE.

Step 2: Listen

  • Each month we listen to a new podcast which is listed on our club HOMPAGE. If you just joined, you can access each podcast episode(s) by clicking on the podcast image or by following the provided link.

Step 3: Discuss

  • Our group meets once during each month to discuss the podcast for that month. Discussion dates and times are listed in the podcast descriptions on our HOMEPAGE. At this time all discussions are online/virtual and use the GoToMeeting link which is also provided in the podcast descriptions.

Podcast Apps for Those on the Go

Podcast apps are great. They let you subscribe to a show so that new episodes appear in your podcast feed. You can control how much content downloads to your device, either manually or by limiting the number of new episodes that download from each show. Most apps have an audio boost feature that automatically enriches human voices. Most also have a dead air trimmer that, when enabled, automatically snips out silences that are longer than a breath or two. But most importantly, podcast apps also let you create playlists!

Below are some suggested podcast apps. All are free to use and some have a plus or premium version that is paid. These are in no particular order though I personally enjoy using the free version of Pocket Casts. Oh, and these are all available for Android and iOS.

More Information

I love listening to podcasts anytime I’m driving alone. It fills that void of a companion passenger and is super therapeutic when you hit gridlock traffic on RT 20. The only problem is when I reference humor or tidbits from the podcasts that I listen to in conversation. More often than not, I’m met with a blank stare (I guess it was one of those: “you had to hear it yourself-ers”). At the same time a similar thing was happening to my wife who would occasionally burst out laughing in her office to a joke no one else was in on. Without much thought we started listening to some of these podcasts together and the shared experience was and still is a large part of our Sunday mornings.

So, I guess that is the reasoning behind why this club exists. So that people who enjoy listening to podcasts have an outlet to discuss them. To be happy, or sad, or angry, or stunned at what you hear and then being able to share that experience while totally dropping episodic references with everyone in on the know.

One of my super talented colleagues created an image for the club. Let me start out by saying: I love it! The first time I seen this image it made me laugh out loud (so yet another moment that people in the library probably thought I was crazy). I wanted to add a bit of “flavor” text that was sent with this image. I think it really captures the immediate reaction that I had when I first seen it.

“I went down an interesting path with this one, but ultimately focused on the idea that podcasts are the modern medium in-which people obtain information for inspiration, creativity, and enlightenment. For the graphic, I decided to depict Einstein (from LOC) wearing headphones. I chose Einstein because he is iconic and most likely would have listened to podcasts on a leisure Saturday afternoon to further expand his knowledge base.”
