Cathy Barber

I am a self-employed appellate attorney with an undergraduate degree in music performance from the University of New Mexico, and a law degree from the University of Notre Dame.  I have been a resident of Guilderland for 26 years, served on the Guilderland Board of Education for 12 years until 2018, and have been a violinist with the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years.  My spouse is Guilderland Town Supervisor Peter Barber, and I have two adult children who are Guilderland graduates.

Ms. Barber’s Statement:

As the daughter of a former librarian, visits to libraries were central to my childhood.  I continued this tradition with my children, who were frequent patrons of Guilderland Public Library.  It is likely that their library experiences had some influence in both of them majoring in English and being currently employed as print-based journalists.

The library is a uniquely important community resource which should be both safeguarded and thoughtfully updated.  As a Trustee, I would look forward to participating in the ongoing discussions about the present and future of the library.

Barbara Fraterrigo

Barbara Fraterrigo is running for re-election to the Board.  She has served the library and community since 1988.  Ms. Fraterrigo and her husband Philip have lived in Guilderland since 1972.  They are the proud parents of five children – Philip, Michael, David, Lynn, and Kerri-Ann – and proud grandparents of 15.  She is a graduate of Emmanuel College with a degree in biology and chemistry and minor in secondary education; former baseball, softball and basketball coach; member of Christ the King church; and current member of the Guilderland Central School District Board.  She has also been involved in managing her husband’s ophthalmology practice.

Ms. Fraterrigo’s Statement:

My extensive experience on the Library Board includes serving as Board President, Vice President and Treasurer.  I currently chair the Nominating Committee, and am a member of the Finance and Personnel Labor Management Committees.  I seek another term as Library Trustee to continue guiding library operations and serving the needs of our vibrant community in the best possible manner.

Mark Keeling

My name is Mark Keeling.  I am a VP with a national insurance company. Our family has lived in the Guilderland area since 2011.  I have a wife, Kim Keeling, the owner/chiropractor at Sports and Spinal Wellness Center.  We have two children, Tristan (13) and Taylor (12).  They both attend Farnsworth Middle School.  As a family we have utilized the library resources to check out books and movies for our kids.

I graduated from high school in Phoenix, AZ.  Since that time I served 14 years in the US Army, and finished both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Mr. Keeling’s Statement:

I feel the library has an important part in the community.  It is a place to gather, provide children’s programs, or support community initiatives.  I feel that the library can go beyond the basic but important resource of providing books and a place to do research.  By being on the Board of Trustees I hope that I can help continue the tradition but also provide insight and direction for future growth.

Phil Metzger

My family and I moved to Guilderland almost 6 years ago and we couldn’t be happier with the community and all it has to offer us. Originally from Long Island, we lived in Houston, Texas for over 15 years where I started working for RR Donnelley, a multinational print company. I progressed through the organization to Lead Systems Analyst where I manage IT projects finding efficiencies and alternative solutions to fulfill the print needs of businesses worldwide. When my wife took a leadership role with a local library, we found Guilderland to be the ideal community to relocate our family to.

Mr. Metzger’s Statement:

Having an inside connection to the world of libraries, I have become acutely aware of their importance in our society and I understand their needs and challenges in our current environment. By running for the Library Board of Trustees, I hope to support the library administration in setting goals that build a stronger community in Guilderland centered around our library, providing the services that drive even more people to take advantage of everything that the library offers.

Barry Nelson

Mr. Nelson is a 44-year resident of Guilderland, and has three adult children and six grandchildren.  He holds a BS in Clinical and Social Psychology from SUNY Albany, and is retired from his career as a Budget Analyst, Administrative Analyst, and Health and Safety Officer for New York State.  He is a Past President of the Friends of Guilderland Free Library, and continues his 31 years of service as a Volunteer Firefighter with the Westmere Fire Department.

Mr. Nelson’s Statement:

In my one year as a Library Trustee, I believe I have contributed to the library being one of the best in New York State.  My experience as a NYS Budget Analyst and my years as fire department Treasurer enabled me to provide valuable input into the library’s budget and spending.  My experience as an Administrative Analyst helped me updating and revising library operating and managing policies.  My experience as a Health and Safety Officer and as a Volunteer Firefighter helped me contribute to increasing the safety of the library’s employees and patrons.  A lot has been accomplished in my year as Trustee, and I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue contributing.
